Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu festival celebrated at the MAA KAMAKHYA TEMPLE in Guwahati, Assam, India. The festival is celebrated in respect and honor to the menstruation cycle of the goddess KAMAKHYA, which usually happens during the monsoon season, and in the month of June.


During this period of time, the Kamakhya Temple remains closed for three days, as it is believed that goddess Kamakhya goes through her annual menstrual cycle. The temple reopens again on the fourth day, which is known as AMBUBACHI or AMETI, symbolizing the end of the goddess's menstruation cycle.

Thousands of devotees from different parts of India, as well as from many other countries gathers at the temple to seek blessings of the goddess Kamakhya. Many devotees performs rituals and fasts during the Ambubachi period as a form of respect, honor and purification.


The Ambubachi Mela is not just a religious event but also a cultural extravaganza where various cultural programs, spiritual practices, fairs and exhibitions can be seen showcasing the rich heritage of ASSAM. During this period of time the atmosphere of the Nilachal Hill where the MAA KAMAKHYA TEMPLE is located is filled with spirituality and devotion.


The significance of Ambubachi Mela prevails in its celebration of femininity and the natural process of life. It also serves as a reminder of the power of creation and the divine feminine energy that is spread around the universe.
